Hans Thybo is professor of Geophysics at Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences, Istanbul Technical University and at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics,University of Oslo. He was a professor of Geophysics for 30 years at the University of Copenhagen and was chair of its Geological Institute for five years. He is an Honorary Editor of Tectonophysics and member of the editorial boards of five other journals. He is a founding member of European Geoscience Union where he was the president for the last 2 years after serving as general Secretary for six years. He is the author, editor, co-author and co-editor of 11 books and more than 200 research papers on diverse aspects of geophysics applied to all tectonic settings with emphasis on plate tectonic processes. Thybo’s most significant contributions to geosciences are related to the understanding of early plate tectonics, rifting processes, orogenesis, basin formation, and the structure, composition and metamorphic state of the lithospheric mantle. He was the first to provide a high-resolution image of the core-mantle transition zone. Thybo is member of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letter, where he has served as vice-president, Danish Academy of Natural Sciences, Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea.
